The Swamp Hollow Hymnal is an unofficial, fan-made archive, blog, and occasional dumping ground dedicated to Dax Riggs and the strange musical universe surrounding him.
Acid Bath. Agents of Oblivion. Deadboy & the Elephantmen. Daisyhead & the Mooncrickets. Golgotha. Solo Dax. Obscure demos. Live recordings. Old photographs. Interviews. Forgotten bands. Questionable MP3s uploaded to the internet twenty years ago.
And memes.
A lot of stupid shit, probably.
SO WHAT IS THIS PLACE?
Somewhere between an archive and a shitpost page.
There is a surprising amount of history surrounding Dax Riggs and his various projects scattered across old websites, interviews, message boards, fan collections, photographs, bootlegs, flyers, and the increasingly haunted remains of the old internet.
Some of that history is easy to find.
Some of it requires digging through websites that look like they haven’t seen daylight since 2004.
And some of it has been repeated so many times that nobody seems to remember whether it actually happened.
That’s the stuff I find interesting.
The goal of The Swamp Hollow Hymnal is to collect some of that history, write about it, preserve interesting pieces of it, and hopefully introduce people to corners of Dax’s music they haven’t stumbled across yet.
But this isn’t supposed to be some solemn marble monument to Dax Riggs.
Sometimes we’re here to learn.
Sometimes we’re here because somebody found a live recording nobody has talked about in fifteen years.
And sometimes we’re here because a photograph of Dax looked funny and somebody needed to put text over it.
Both are sacred duties.
THE FAMILY TREE
Most people arrive through Acid Bath.
Fair enough.
But Acid Bath is only one particularly loud branch of a much stranger tree.
Keep wandering and eventually you run into Daisyhead & the Mooncrickets, Agents of Oblivion, Deadboy & the Elephantmen, Dax’s solo records, early projects, demos, alternate versions, live recordings, covers, collaborations, and assorted musical ghosts.
That’s the territory this site wanders through.
One day there might be a long post trying to untangle the history of some obscure recording.
The next day there might be a meme that took approximately forty-five seconds to make.
This is intentional.
ABOUT THE “ARCHIVE” PART
Calling something an archive carries a little responsibility.
Underground music history gets muddy quickly. Dates conflict. Recordings get mislabeled. Stories become rumors and rumors eventually get repeated as facts.
So when a post here is actually trying to document history, I’ll make an effort to distinguish between things that can be verified and things that are simply part of the lore.
If something isn’t known for certain, I’ll try not to pretend it is.
Corrections are welcome.
Old photographs, flyers, recordings, stories, interviews, advertisements, and other pieces of history are welcome too.
The swamp can always get deeper.
